Women’s Italy, Bertolini: “Let’s start again from the match against Brazil”

The words of the Italian women’s coach

A new meeting and two international challenges to continue preparing for the World Cup: just over eight months from the final phase of the World Cup, the Italians continue to approach the world championship next summer in Australia and New Zealand.

“Enthusiasm and motivation” are the key words that Milena Bertolini repeats almost like a mantra at the press conference for the start of the training camp in Coverciano. Because even if there seems to be almost a football era before the kick-off of the 2023 World Cup, the coach knows how essential it is to keep the level of concentration high right now. “Everyone, from the players to the staff – underlines Bertolini – must have our goal in mind, even in the long term: this is a great opportunity for the whole movement”.

A month ago the Azzurre lost 1-0 in the fascinating setting of the ‘Luigi Ferraris’ stadium in Genoa in an equally fascinating match against Brazil: “From there – continues the coach – we have to start again: it’s true, we lost, but in that match we showed a lot of positive things, against a team among the best in the world. Let’s start over from that match, trying to improve in the offensive aspects ”.

Now two new friendly matches await the Azzurre: it starts on Friday 11 November, at 5.30 pm in Lignano Sabbiadoro, against Austria (live on Rai 2) and then the Northern Irish trip with the challenge to the hosts scheduled for Tuesday November 15th, at 8 pm Italian (live on RaiSport). “Austria is a team that has an important physical intensity and I think it was the revelation of the last European Championships. It will be a high-level test, because it will test us precisely in terms of intensity, which we need. During this meeting we will do some tests just in preparation for the World Cup: this is why we are working on an enlarged group, despite the absence of some injured players. The group of the World Cup in which we were drawn? Challenging, but when you reach these levels it is normal to be like this: we will face Sweden, which is a top team, and Argentina, a high-level team. We will play in a strange situation, being summer, but there, between Auckland and Wellington, given the latitude, we will be in a cold area: we will go to a beautiful place, but we will have to have a great ability to adapt.

In the blue group of Coverciano, Juventus goalkeeper Roberta Aprile was called today to replace Katja Schroffenegger, who tested positive at Covid. Finally, a joke from Milena Bertolini about the Ferrovie dello Stato Italiane Super Cup match, which last Saturday’s afternoon in Parma colored yellow and red: “It was definitely a hard-fought match. In the finals there is so much tension that it is normal that it was not a great race. But the fact that there is so much balance at the top is important. In fact, matches like this make you grow not so much in terms of intensity, but in mentality, because every episode can become fundamental ”.
