ROME – Less than one in three Brazilian people trust the military, one of the lowest percentages in the world. This is what emerges from a research conducted in 28 countries by Ipsos, one of the most famous polling companies on the planet. The survey, relaunched by all the major Brazilian media, is contained in a report on the global credibility index of the various professional categories. The research was conducted by interviewing more than 21,000 people on all continents. One thousand of the citizens who were heard were Brazilians. In the South American country, only 30 percent of the people questioned said they had faith in the army. Compared to the sample considered by Ipsos, Brazil is the fourth country with the lowest confidence in the military after South Korea, South Africa and Colombia. The country is 11 percentage points below the average that emerged from the sample for confidence in the army, which is 41 percent. In Brazil, the most trusted professionals are teachers, followed by scientists and doctors, The Ipsos investigation has received some attention from Brazilian newspapers, and perhaps this is no coincidence. President Jair Bolsonaro is a former military man, as is his current Vice President Hamilton Mourão, a retired general. Walter Braga Netto, the man chosen by the head of state as candidate for vice president in the elections to be held next October 2, with which Bolsonaro will try to get elected for a second term, also comes from the armed forces.

The president’s relationship with the armed forces, which led the country with a dictatorship between 1964 and 1985, has always been very close and is also cause for fear among his opponents. During the presentation of his candidacy last month, the president made it clear that “the army is with him”. According to rumors published yesterday by the international press starting from the testimonies of “numerous US government officials”, US Congressmen would have held a $ 100 million order for Javelin anti-tank missiles requested by Brasilia for months, then approved, out of fear that Bolsonaro was preparing for some kind of uprising ahead of the elections.
