Strong to intense, isolated to violent hailstorms hit southern and southeastern Brazil on Tuesday afternoon. Hailstones of medium to large size or that precipitated in large quantities were recorded in at least four Brazilian states: Rio Grande do Sul, Santa Catarina, Rio de Janeiro and Minas Gerais.

In Rio Grande do Sul, the municipalities of Esmeralda and Pinhal da Serra were hit by a hailstorm. Hailstones, of moderate diameter, came to accumulate in large quantities in the fields and crops. Growers in northeastern Rio Grande do Sul, in Campos de Cima da Serra, anticipate significant losses. According to the farmers, in a preliminary analysis, there is damage to corn and wheat crops.

The same instability that hit the Campos de Cima da Serra, in the Planalto Sul Catarinense. The municipalities of São Joaquim and Urupema were the most affected. The Caminhos da Neve valley, located three kilometers from the center of São Joaquim, was covered with a thick layer of ice as a result of the hail. Many drivers were stranded on the road. The hailstorm lasted about 15 minutes, but its intensity was enough to turn the road white as if it had snowed, which greatly complicated traffic on the road.

A heavy hailstorm also hit the city of Rio de Janeiro. Hailstones were recorded in several neighborhoods, particularly in the western and northern areas of the capital Rio de Janeiro. Galeão International Airport even reported hail in a special bulletin at 4:43 p.m. Hail also fell in other parts of the region, such as Duque de Caxias, Baixada Fluminense.

In southern Minas Gerais, Dona Euzébia and other towns in the region experienced a storm with heavy rain, wind and lots of hail. In some municipalities in the region, such as Rio Pomba, Guarani and Piraúba, the ground was covered with ice. In Astolfo Dutra and in the district of Sobral Pinto, the strong hailstorm scared the inhabitants.

In the municipality of Passos, the large hailstones hit the highways in the region with a traffic stoppage. The large hail shattered dozens of car windshields.

One of the municipalities affected was Campos Gerais, where the hailstorm was violent with a lot of damage in the urban area of ​​the city. Many roofs of houses and buildings were damaged and cars had their windows pierced by huge hailstones.
