A great comeback also for Lewis Hamilton, who finished second after a great comeback following the initial contact with Verstappen at the start. Neither Ferrari nor Red Bull have been able to keep pace with the two Mercedes standard bearers, who have given the first double as well as victory of the season. Toto Wolff commented on the great performance of the W-13 and the two drivers at the end of the Interlagos Grand Prix.
The words of Toto Wolff on the victory of Mercedes and Russell at Interlagos
“He withstood the final pressure and the victory is well deserved. After the race he said that, while going to the pits, he was thinking about the days of karting and it is incredible how far he has come. Now he has his first win and we hope this is the first of many others. It’s been a bit of a mixed season for him. He had a very strong start to the season and then a bit of a breakdown. But our pilots encourage each other and collaborate even when necessary. They are on a very similar level and so it must be “, Wolff commented.
Wolff then recalled: “James Vowles was very important when George was in our academy and he still is today for our talents. But there are so many people who have been and are important throughout his career so far. I remember Niki Lauda only got on the podium once in a junior class, when George won in Formula 3, and after that he said: ‘He’s going to be a good guy.’
