The change of government begins to generate movements in the big media in Brazil. As usually happens in most of the countries of the world, the television networks or the main newspapers line up to build the relationship with the new administration.
Such is the case of CNN Brazil. The North American chain landed during the government of Jair Bolsonaro with businessman Douglas Tavolaro, a man close to the President who installed the medium in March 2020 and oriented it in favor of the government. Over time, he moderated the line and added critical journalists, but it is known that they have access to places that others cannot reach.
Lula questioned Alberto’s agreement with the IMF and believes that Peronism is going to lose the elections
“It is not an official media but for example when the case of Carla Zambelli occurred, CNN was the only media that gave her a microphone,” someone who knows the process closely explained to LPO.
Tavolaro ad his departure from the station as a result of business in the United States that would be linked to the arrival of CBS from the United States to Brazil and he sold all his shares to the Menin family, who was a partner of the channel and owns MRV Constructora. Rubens Menin acquired all of his shares.
In this framework, the Friday before the ballot confirmed than Joao Camargo, one of the most important businessmen in Brazil who is president of the Sphere Group, which brings together the main companies in the country. It was Camargo and the Esfera Group that organized the dinner with Lula prior to the first round.
The leading figures at the event were Trabuco do Bradesco and Abílio Diniz from Grupo Península dedicated to private investment and with a presence in several companies such as Carrefour, Rubens Ometto from the energy giant Raízen, Josué Gomes from the Federation of Industrialists of the State of São Paulo, Luiz Enrique Guimarães de Cosan (energy logistics, energy distribution, among other activities), Fabio Erminio de Moreas, Votorantin (centennial company with businesses in sustainable energy, aluminum and dozens of other portfolios) and Andre Estevez, BTG Pactuaul. In other words, commerce, agribusiness, industry and the financial system were represented.
Lula’s statement came out of this meeting regarding his criticism of Argentina’s agreement with the IMF and the president-elect’s promises to give control of the economy to his deputy Geraldo Alckmin. In addition, Camargo took it upon himself to say throughout the electoral campaign that “the businessman is not averse to Lula” in the midst of market speculation regarding the economic policy of his future government.
The internal movements on CNN in the run-up to the elections coincided with a suggestive request from the Esfera Group the day after the ballot, where it congratulated the candidates and asked “to unite for the reforms that will guarantee economic growth and investment to meet the social demands”. “We will continue to fulfill our duty to promote dialogue between public authorities and economic agents to generate effective solutions for our country,” he concludes.
The sources consulted clarify that it is a mistake to call the new owner of CNN a “Lulista” but they confirm that the pragmatism that leads him to move from right to left will allow CNN to have a direct relationship with the new government from January 1
